4 for Mathieu as Timmins outlasts Powassan in 2nd OT

POWASSAN, Ont. – Wayne Mathieu’s fourth goal of the game, which came shorthanded 1:36 into the second overtime, was the difference as the Timmins Rock outlasted the Powassan Voodoos 7-6 Sunday night in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Powassan Sportsplex.

After the Voodoos’ Kyle Challis opened the scoring 3:40 into the game, the Rock struck back with three of their own before the first period was complete thanks to markers from Jordan Rendle, Mathieu and Stewart Parnell’s initial league tally.

Mathieu collected another 24 seconds into the middle stanza to put the visitors up by three.

Countering, it was Powassan’s turn to light the lamp with a trio of tallies and knot the affair at 4-4 as Gary Mantz, Dayton Murray and Challis all found the back of the net on Timmins starter Matt Nixon.

The back and forth contest saw the Rock go back on top before the period had expired thanks to Mathieu setting up Tyler Romain for his third at 16:23.

Rolling along, Mathieu added his third of the contest 4:04 into the third only to see the Voodoos strike back with goals from Andy Baker 10 minutes later and Mantz with 55 seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time.

After the first OT was scoreless, Mathieu finished off his five-point night by ending it in the second OT with his club down a man to complete the wild affair and give his side the extra point.

Romain dished out three assists for Timmins while Challis and Murray had two helpers apiece for Powassan.

Nixon finished with 40 saves to pick up the victory for the Rock.

Nicholas Campbell started for the Voodoos and allowed three against on eight attempts in less than 14 minutes of work.

Nate McDonald entered the game in the first and suffered the defeat in relief saving 22 of 26 overall.
