Blind River earns 3-1 win over Powassan

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A Yianni Liarakos goal midway through the third period was the game-winner as the Blind River Beavers went on to defeat the visiting Powassan Voodoos 3-1 Sunday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Blind River Community Centre.

It was a tightly-contested first period in which neither side would score.

Cade Herd put the Voodoos in flight 10:20 into the second stanza as he notched his fourth of the season with an assist going to Kyle Challis.

Blind River drew level at 14:48 as Jordan Kreller picked up his fourth for the Beavers.

It stayed tied 1-1 until half way through the third when Liarakos supplied the eventual difference maker, which was his 27th tally of 2016-17. It was also his ninth game-winning goal, which is the second most in the NOJHL.

The Beavers then got some insurance with 71 seconds remaining on Max Khull’s 17th, which was scored into an empty net, to secure the victory.

Myles Hektor made 20 stops for Blind River to record the win helping them improve to 23-16-1-0 overall.

Andrew Suriano had 33 saves in defeat for Powassan who fell to 33-5-1-1 on the season.
