Kirkland Lake extends win streak to 6 with triumph at Powassan

POWASSAN, Ont. – A Kevin Ford tally with 6:07 remaining in regulation was the game-winner as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners pulled out a narrow 2-1 road triumph over the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Powassan Voodoos Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

After a scoreless opening period, the Voodoos were quick to strike in the second stanza as Gary Mantz collected his 27th goal of the season 44 seconds into the middle session.

A Gold Miners power play allowed them to knot the affair eight minutes later as Marshal Nikitin picked up his 11th of the campaign while the visitors enjoyed a man advantage opportunity.

Nikitin also extended a point streak to six with his effort.

The score stayed that way until Ford’s difference maker in the third that helped Kirkland Lake win their sixth consecutive contest as he supplied his team-best 31st marker of 2016-17.

Allan Menary was called upon to make 28 saves in earning the victory for the Gold Miners as he improved to 8-0-1-0 with the club.

Andrew Suriano suffered the loss for the Voodoos allowing two against on 23 attempts.
