Mantz’s hat trick helps Powassan paste Espanola 6-1

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up a hat trick from Gary Mantz to help them paste the Espanola Express 6-1 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Mantz started his night by notching the lone tally of the opening period 6:54 into the contest.

The Voodoos extended their cushion to three by getting goals in the second stanza from Tyler Gervais-Rolfe and Parker Bowman.

Mantz then made it 4-0 for his club 65 seconds into the third before Riley Smith got Espanola on the board at 6:36.

Powassan got that back less than two minutes later when Andy Baker collected his league-leading 40th goal of the season to make it 5-1.

The Voodoos’ Mantz then finished off his impressive evening at 11:33 with his third of the game and 30th overall to round out the scoring.

Gabriel Rheault doled out two assists to aid the visitors’ offensive cause.

Nate McDonald made 34 stops to post the win for Powassan.

Logan Sawka started for the Express and suffered the setback allowing five against on 54 attempts while Mitchell Jacobson handled 11 of 12 in 11 and a half minutes of relief.
