NOJHL falls to OJHL Hawerchuk in Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge finale

CORNWALL, Ont. – Brendan McGlynn (Oakville Blades) turned aside all 15 shots he faced to post the shutout as he backstopped Ontario Junior Hockey League Hawerchuk to a 3-0 victory over the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Tuesday evening at the Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Cornwall, Ont.

The NOJHL had a great chance to get on the board first as David Osborne (Iroquois Falls Eskis) was hindered on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot at 4:09.

On his opportunity however, Osborne snapped a shot that got eluded McGlynn, but rang off the goal post and went out of play.

The OJHL squad would counter and open the scoring during a man advantage opportunity with 9:11 to go in the frame as Cameron Wright (St. Michael’s Buzzers) whipped one past Nate McDonald (Powassan Voodoos) from the left side.

Hawerchuk came right back and added another, a minute later, from nearly the same spot as their initial effort with Alex Ierullo (Newmarket Hurricanes) sliding one low through the NOJHL netminder.

A tough break for the NOJHL allowed their opponents to add some insurance in the latter stages of the contest.

After a defenceman lost his footing at the OJHL blueline, it allowed Dawson Baker (Trenton Golden Hawks) to break in on a two-on-one where he elected to shoot and wired one high past McDonald at 15:46 to round out the night’s scoring.

McDonald handled 22 of the 25 attempts he saw in defeat.

Team NOJHL finishes with their participation in the 10-team event at 0-4 and in fifth place in their division as the club will not advance to the quarter-finals, which begin Wednesday.

League regular season action resumes Wednesday as the Soo Thunderbirds host the Elliot Lake Wildcats in a 7 p.m. start at Essar Centre.
