NOJHL spring meeting wrap-up

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Friday a number of the details from their recently completed spring meeting.

Among the items discussed between the NOJHL Board of Directors, Executive Staff and the 12 member clubs, was the league budget for the 2016-17 season, its game schedule and a proposed league Showcase.

Each NOJHL team will play a 54-game regular season schedule in 2016-17, which will include eight contests vs. divisional opponents, one home and one away against clubs from the other division as well as two additional contests vs. a team’s closest geographical rival.

Also discussed was the formation of a NOJHL Showcase, which will be held in October.

Dates, times and a location of the NOJHL Showcase will be announced once finalized.

Taking into account that 14 players from last season’s teams have moved on to the Canadian Hockey League teams while a record number of NOJHL alumni have advanced to the NCAA and CIS ranks, it was deemed vital that the league continue to showcase its players and that no better time and place to help accomplish this even further would be to host a NOJHL Showcase.

The NOJHL continues to produce a very good track record of graduating prospects to the OHL and QMJHL while at the same time developing players who commit to schools and compete in the NCAA and CIS.

“The focus, determination and leadership shown by the Board of Directors at the meeting is to be commended,” stated NOJHL Commissioner Robert Mazzuca.

“Their continued efforts along with the significant contributions of our member clubs bodes well for the future of our league,” added Mazzuca.

With planning already well underway for 2016-17, there is still plenty to be decided on the ice this season as league divisional final action begins this weekend as the four remaining teams continue their quest for a NOJHL championship.

The NOJHL is also looking forward to partnering with the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in hosting the 2016 Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A championship, May 3-7, at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
