Voodoos extend win streak with 2 OT thriller

COCHRANE, Ont. – An Eric Nagy tally with 55 seconds remaining in the second overtime was the difference as the Powassan Voodoos edged the Cochrane Crunch 5-4 Friday in a highly-entertaining Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

With the win the No. 1 Canadian Junior Hockey League ranked Voodoos remain unbeaten on the season moving to 11-0-0-0 on the season while the Crunch earned a point as they saw their record dip to 12-3-1-0.

Powassan grabbed a 2-1 lead after one period of play sandwiching power play markers by Tyler Peters and Jake Staples around an even strength effort off the stick of Cochrane’s John Stevenson.

The Crunch tied it five minutes into the second courtesy of a Zak Stepaniuk effort and then went ahead at 12:38 on Hunter Atchison’s 15th goal of the campaign.

Staples added his second of the evening and ninth overall at 16:25 to knot the affair at 3-3 through 40 minutes.

The NOJHL’s leading goal scorer, in Cochrane’s Dustin Cordeiro, put the home side back in front with eight and half minutes to go in regulation as he buried his 20th of the season.

Battling back, the Voodoos forced extra time late thanks to Peters who notched the equalizer with 52 seconds to go.

Heading to OT the two sides battled back and forth through a scoreless first five-minute session without a winner being decided.

Moving to three skaters aside in double OT, both clubs traded great chances to end it, with Nagy finally doing so late as he fired a short from the right side that hit Crunch netminder Brett Young in the mask and slowly trickled across the goal line for the game-winner.

Nathaniel McLeod and Steve Harland picked up two assists apiece for the Voodoos in the contest.

Garrett Forrest kicked out 48 shots through just over 69 minutes of action to earn the victory for Powassan.

Young faced 39 shots in defeat for Cochrane who earned a point with the double OT setback.
