Voodoos roll over Eskis for 23rd straight NOJHL triumph

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos had multiple-point nights from 10 different skaters Monday evening to register their 23rd consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory in a row as they blitzed the Iroquois Falls Eskis 12-3 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Powassan took early control of the contest grabbing a 3-0 lead after one period of play on goal from Gary Mantz, Kyle Challis and Tyson Gilmour.

Ryan Gruszka got one back for Iroquois Falls five and a half minutes into the middle stanza, but the Voodoos came right back and tacked on three more tallies courtesy of Andy Baker, with his league-leading 33rd, Ryan Theriault and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe to go up 6-2 after two.

Brett Hahkala added another for the home side 52 seconds into the final frame to extend their lead.

The Eskis Alex Mitsionis picked up his 10th of the campaign at 4:10, but it was more Powassan from there as they connected four times in a seven-minute run to blow it open.

Gervais-Rolfe notched two more, Hahkala picked up another while Challis did likewise.

After David Stickney scored for Iroquois Falls at 14:38, Challis joined Gervais-Rolfe with hat tricks to round things out.

Case Herd and Gilmour also supplied three assists in the one-sided triumph.

Andrew Suriano made 20 stops to record his first NOJHL victory as the Voodoos won for a league-best 30th time this season.

Artem Bortovskiy and Trevor Hawkes both saw time in goal for the Eskis as they faced a combined 63 shots in defeat.
