Voodoos win 22nd in a row while ending T-Birds streak at 10

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos extended their franchise-record winning streak to 22 in succession Saturday and put an end to the Soo Thunderbirds 10-game run in the process with a 5-3 triumph in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Sault Ste. Marie got on the board first compliments of Austin Kozluk’s 13th goal of 2016-17 five minutes into the contest only to see the Voodoos answer back with markers from Cade Herd and Brett Hahkala before the frame was complete to go up 2-1.

Rhys Brown added to Powassan’s lead in the second only to see Greg Smith match that for the Thunderbirds.

The man advantage allowed the home side to add to their cushion late in the stanza as Andy Baker collected his league-leading 32nd goal of the season at 18:05.

Ryan Bazzana supplied some insurance for the Voodoos in the final frame beforethe Soo’s Noah Solinger rounded out the night’s scoring midway through the third.

Gary Mantz dished out three assists for Powassan in helping them continue their impressive winning streak.

The Voodoos outshot the T-Birds 37-36 on the night with Nate McDonald recording the victory and Brandon Gordon the defeat.
