Young talent impresses at Voodoos Camp
POWASSAN, Ont. — The Powassan Voodoos of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League held their second annual Spring Prospects Camp at North Bay’s Memorial Gardens over the weekend.
More than 30 players from across Ontario participated in the two day camp which had the players go through drills and then compete in three four-on-four inter-squad games. Â
Voodoos head coach Scott Wray was pleased with the turnout and the level of competition.
“We had some really good young talent from the 2000 age group to the 1998 group,” said Coach Wray.
“It was nice to see some really good young players from the North and even the Toronto area,” added Wray.
Voodoos GM Chris Dawson was impressed with the turnout and the response.
“We had a lot of positive feedback from parents and players about the camp,” offered Dawson about the two-day spring camp.
“Many will be invited to our mid-summer camp and our main camp in late August. While we are only moving on four 20-year-olds we know there are some spots to fill and camps like this are a key building block for the future of our program.”
The Voodoos Head Coach agrees.
“We had six or seven guys that came to this same camp last year that were in our line-up this season and we won 40 games and were ranked nationally so you find diamonds in the rough, it’s a real eye opener and it helps these guys propel their career, stated Wray.
The NOJHL team which is the affiliate of the North Bay Battalion is looking to build off an impressive 40 win season that finished with a disappointing loss in the opening round of the playoffs to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.Â
The Voodoos will have one more Prospects Camp before main camp as the team will held a two-day Skate in Barrie on July 9-10.
