POWASSAN, Ont. – The red-hot Powassan Voodoos piled on six goals in the second period as they went on to win their 15th Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game in a row Saturday as they took down the Hearst Lumberjacks 7-1 at the Powassan Sportsplex
About the same time they scored in Friday’s shutout victory over Cochrane, the high-flying Voodoos connected again on this night as Sam Ellwood collected his fifth of the season at 4:39 of the first to opening the scoring.
Adding one of the assists on the play was Tomas Yachemenev, who extended a point streak to seven straight outings.
Powassan held that narrow lead into the second stanza, but Hearst came back to equalize early as Olivier Cloutier-Faucher scored for the fourth time in five games as his ninth tied it at 2:09.
However, the league-leading Voodoos countered quickly to regain the lead however as Cade Herd put the hosts back on top a minute and a half later.
It was more from Powassan moments later with Parker Bowman making it 3-1 at 4:55.
Not done there, they added to their cushion a few shifts later on a Noah Brant effort.
Bowman then banged in his second of the frame as he connected on the power play to keep the hosts clicking offensively while Yachmenev also tallied again to break it open.
The six-goal stanza finally came to an end with Riley Pitt capping off the outburst
Third period play saw no further scoring as the Voodoos cruised to the one-sided triumph.
Ellwood dished out four assists to go with his goal for a five-point night while Gregory Trudeau-Paquet had four helpers of his own in the win.
Owen Say made 24 stops to remain undefeated in league play of the season, improving to 12-0 overall.
