4 NOJHL clubs earn recognition in CJHL rankings

SUDBURY – For the first time there are four Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League clubs that were listed in the latest Canadian Junior Hockey League Pointstreak top 20 and honourable mention rankings, which were announced Monday.

The unbeaten Powassan Voodoos were slotted third overall in the 131-team CJHL while the Cochrane Crunch sit 11th, the defending NOJHL and Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion Soo Thunderbirds are 17th and the 2016 Dudley-Hewitt Cup host Kirkland Lake Gold Miners garnered honourable mention status in the latest listings, which are compiled in conjunction with International Scouting Services.

Powassan is off to an impressive 7-0 start to begin the 2015-16 season and sit in second spot in the NOJHL East, two points behind the 8-1 Crunch while also holding two games in hand on the Crunch.

Kirkland Lake has gone 6-1 in seven starts and also remains in the hunt for the east division lead with 12 points, four in arrears of Cochrane and two behind the Voodoos.

Over in the NOJHL West, the Thunderbirds are 9-1 to pace the division with their 18 overall points also leading the league.

There is also a new No. 1 side in the CJHL this week with the Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) taking over top spot.

Slipping one notch to No. 2 is the Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL).
