SUDBURY, Ont. – Riding the hot stick of Billy Biedermann, the Greater Sudbury Cubs saw him score three times, including collecting the game-winner, to lead his side to a 5-1 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Getting the night’s opening tally, Biedermann had a couple of cracks off a rebound of an Oliver Smith attempt from up high that was stopped by the shoulder of Powassan starter Kannon Flageolle, but he gathered the puck and eventually spun in close before sliding in a low backhand at 13:50 of the first period.
Countering quickly to begin the middle stanza, the Voodoos scored 59 seconds in with Mathieu MacMillan deftly deflecting a Carson Ricci shot from the right point while situated near the net that got through Cubs goalkeeper Noah Beaulne.
Answering back, the home side retook the lead at 3:32 with Biedermann bagging his second of the night as he buried a Smith feed from below the goal line at the top of the crease.
It was more Greater Sudbury moments later as Christopher Innes found himself wide open in the slot and proceeded to whip in a Cameron Shanks set-up glove side for his first tally of the campaign.
Going to the power play later in the period, Biedermann used a quick give-and-go with Kyloe Ellis before skating to the top of the left circle and completing his three-tally night and picking up his 10th of the season to register his second league hat trick.
Carrying their edge into the final frame, the Cubs kept coming and tacked on another as Shanks powered past a pair of Powassan defenders and while driving to the net finished off his club’s fifth marker of the evening at 2:16.
That proved to be it offensively as Greater Sudbury skated off with the win.
Beaulne won his fourth straight appearance to help the NOJHL-leading Cubs improve to 11-2-2-0 while Flageolle suffered the defeat as the Voodoos fell to 8-6-0-0.
