Canadians build early lead, hold on to edge Voodoos

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – The Rayside-Balfour Canadians stormed out to an early three-goal lead then withstood a comeback bid by the Powassan Voodoos to hold on for a 3-2 triumph Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Chelmsford Arena.

The first 12-plus minutes of the opening period was all Canadians as they struck three times to take early control.

Otis Goldman got Rayside-Balfour going 49 seconds into the contest as he knocked in his ninth of the season.

Joel Lemay increased the lead for the home side at 6:08 while Ryan Erickson added another six minutes later to spell an early end to Voodoos’ starter Mario Cavaliere’s evening in favour of Garrett Forrest.

Special teams allowed Powassan to get one the board as 18:36 as Eric Champagne scored on the power play.

Following a scoreless middle session, the visitors drew closer 90 seconds into the final frame, courtesy of Daniel Golba in what turned out to be the final goal of the evening.

Jessie Morin made 33 saves to pick up the win for the Canadians.

Cavaliere faced six attempts in defeat for the Voodoos while Forrest stopped all 24 attempts he saw in relief.
