Express shock Voodoos with impressive comeback win

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Espanola Express stormed back from a three-goal, third period deficit by scoring four times in the final frame to shock the Powassan Voodoos 5-4 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Wednesday at the Regional Recreation Complex.

The Voodoos got in flight 7:14 into the contest when Tyler Peters connected.

Powassan upped their lead three minutes later as Michael Silveri found the back of the net to put the visitors up by a pair.

The Voodoos kept coming in the middle session as they made it 3-0 at 3:31 as Silveri collected his second of the night and 17th overall.

Eric Champagne added to the Powassan cushion at 7:54 with a shorthanded effort before Espanola got on the board in the latter stages of the stanza on a Riley Nadeau effort.

The Express continued their comeback bid early in the third as Dominik Lavergne made it a 4-2 game via the power play.

Keenan Kennedy’s fourth of the season four minutes into the final frame brought Espanola to within one while Mitchal Payette tied it with 12:28 left with Powassan replacing starter Mario Cavaliere in favour of Garrett Forrest the rest of the way after that.

The Express greeted Forrest with the game-winner however as the home side completed the impressive rally on a Shane Snow effort with 10:43 to go.

Patrick Smith and Aaron Roschinsky both had two assists to help the winning side in their comeback triumph.

Kyle Moore had a couple helpers for the Voodoos.

Kevin Labelle, who entered the game in net for Espanola after the fourth marker allowed by Aaron Callan, was solid in nearly 32 minutes of relief stopping all 24 shots fired his way to record the victory.

Callan saw 17 attempts put his way during his stint between the pipes.

Forrest stopped seven of eight in the third and suffered the defeat for Powassan while Cavaliere handled 33 of 37 shots fired his way.
