Gold Miners rally to upset Voodoos in OT

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A Max Newnam power play marker 25 seconds into overtime lifted the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to an upset 4-3 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Friday at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The visiting Voodoos were the first to strike on the night as Jacob Peterson-Galema scored for a fourth time in 2019-20 as his effort at 8:35 of the opening frame put the guests in front early.

Parker Bowman’s 32nd of the season added to the Powassan lead 7:20 into the middle session.

Battling back, Kirkland Lake tallied twice in the back half of the period to knot the affair at 2-2 after two.

Caleb Thompson at even strength and Camille Marcoux, via the man advantage, both picked up their eighth goals of the season to level the proceedings heading to the third.

There the Voodoos went back on top five minutes in on Peterson-Galema’s second of the night.

Answering once more, the Gold Miners forced OT midway through the frame thanks to Robert McLaughlin.

On the power play to commence the extra session, Newnam made quick work for the home side as his 10th of the campaign ended it and put an finish to a six-game winless spell Kirkland Lake was on.

Lucas Branch dished out two assists in the triumph for the Gold Miners.

Kyle McNair made 27 stops to pick up the win for KL while Powassan starter Christian Cicigoi faced 36 attempts in defeat as his side saw a winning streak of five come to an end in defeat.
