POWASSAN, Ont. – A Mathieu Comeau power play tally 1:47 into overtime lifted the Hearst Lumberjacks to a 4-3 win over the Powassan Voodoos Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Powassan began the night’s scoring 12 and a half minutes into the contest right off a face-off win as Chase MacQueen-Spence spun on the left wing and fired one upstairs on Hearst starter Liam Oxner to run a point streak to five in succession.
Picking up a late man advantage, the Lumberjacks tied it at 19:11 with Robbie Rutledge chipping one over the pad of Alex Bugeja while parked at the top of the crease.
Half way through the middle stanza, Hearst took the lead when Riley Klugerman finished off a face-off win from close range.
Pressing early in the third, the Voodoos tied it as Rodion Tatarenko buried one from the slot as he notched his 12th tally of the campaign to finish off a flurry of chances.
Retaking the lead the Lumberjacks’ Carson Cox lifted in a rebound over a sprawled Bugeja at 7:40.
Back and forth they went with Powassan tying things up once more while up a skater as Mike Levin stuffed in a loose disk off a goal-mouth scramble with 7:12 remaining to force extra time.
In OT, the guests got the game-winner from Comeau as he quickly let a one-timer go in front after taking a Cox feed from behind the net to end it.
Shots on goal finished 38-34 in the Voodoos favour with Oxner picking up the victory while Bugeja helped his side earn a point in defeat.
