SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League leaders in goals-scored, tacked on five more to their totals Wednesday as part of a 5-4 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in NOJHL Showcase action at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Striking first, Powassan opened the scoring 4:14 into the affair when Ryan Patrick sent a feed in front from the corner where Rhys Smetham was there to chip a backhand over the pad of Greater Sudbury starter Noah Beaulne.

Countering quickly, the Cubs drew level a minute and a half later thanks to Noah Kohan, who slammed in a Miguel Renard set-up from close range.

They then went in front a couple of shifts later compliments of Marshall McCharles as the rookie forward buried a cross-crease feed from Cameron Walker.

It was more from that combo at 11:51 when Walker found a wide-open McCharles alone in close where he neatly redirected the pass through the legs of Powassan netminder Kannon Flageolle.

A fifth goal in the session was provided by the Voodoos as Jack Kelly raised a one-timer from the slot that sailed over the glove of Beaulne and dropped into the net.

The tally-total grew in the final minute of the first with Greater Sudbury’s Billy Biedermann getting into the act as he quickly whipped in a crisp pass put on the tape by Oliver Smith at 19:04.

Leading the NOJHL in goals, so far this season, the Cubs reached the 50-plateau midway through the match-up on Kohan’s second of the day as he whistled one in blocker side on a two-on-one.

Down a skater with five minutes remaining, Powassan broke out on a three-on-one and saw Mathieu MacMillan feed Sean Thies who eventually stuffed a chance under Beaulne for a shorthanded marker.

The Voodoos did get a buzzer-beater just prior to time expiring courtesy of Thies, who hammered it in while going to the net to round out the scoring.

With the result, Greater Sudbury improved to 8-2-1-0 while Powassan dropped to 6-4-0-0.
