Mondoux’s late winner lifts Powassan over Kingston of OJHL
POWASSAN, Ont. – An Eric Mondoux goal with 4:53 remaining in regulation proved to the game-winner as the defending Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Powassan Voodoos slipped past the Kingston Voyageurs (OJHL) 4-3 Thursday afternoon at the Powassan Sportsplex.
After Kingston’s Troy Bowditch opened the scoring, via the power play, three and a half minutes into the contest, the Voodoos’ Ryan Theriault levelled the proceedings at 15:20 of the first period.
Powassan then went in front before the session was complete on a Tyson Gilmour unassisted effort at 17:11.
Action in the middle stanza saw each side score once with Danny Reidel tying it for the Voyageurs before Cade Herd put the home side back on top later in the frame.
The Ontario Junior Hockey League side from Kingston drew even once again with 7:08 to go on a Cole Edwards effort, but Mondoux finished off the work of Herd and Gilmour in the late going to secure the Voodoos’ victory.
Christian Cicogoi started for Powassan and stopped 21 of 22 in nearly 30 minutes of work while Joel Rainville made 18 saves in relief to record the win.
Kyle McNair played the first two periods in net for the Voyageurs and handled 29 of the 32 shots fired his way.
Hayden Ford entered the contest in the third and suffered the loss while making 11 saves.
The Voodoos return to the ice at the Sportsplex Friday afternoon as they take on the French River Rapids in a 2 p.m. matinee.
Kingston meanwhile travels to Cochrane to open up play in the Polar Bear Classic preseason tourney where they will take on the NOJHL’s Kirkland Lake Gold Miners at 4 p.m.
