NOJHL announces its final Eastlink 3 Stars of the week for 2016-17 season

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Gary Mantz and Tyson Gilmour of the Powassan Voodoos along with Yianni Liarakos of the Blind River Beavers have been named as its final Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the 2016-17 season.

GARY MANTZ, (F) POWASSAN VOODOOS – Mantz capped off an impressive postseason for the NOJHL-champion Voodoos by picking up five points in the last two games of the league championship series vs. Blind River.

The 19-year-old native of Waterloo, Ont., scored once and dished out two assists Friday as Powassan skated to a 6-1 victory in Game 3 vs. the Beavers.

He then tallied twice, including the game-winner, Saturday as the Voodoos went on to capture their first-ever NOJHL title.

Mantz was an offensive force for Powassan all throughout the NOJHL playoffs registering points in all 12 contests his squad played.

Included in that, were nine multi-point affairs as he led his club and finished second overall in postseason scoring with 24 points.

He also tied for the league lead in playoff goals with 12.

YIANNI LIARAKOS, (F) BLIND RIVER BEAVERS – Despite falling in the finals to Powassan, Liarakos capped off his Jr. ‘A’ career in tremendous fashion as he led all NOJHL skaters in playoff points with 25 in 16 outings.

That featured him playing a part in all four goals the Beavers scored in Game 4 Saturday as he notched a hat trick and chipped in with an assist.

In all, the 20-year-old from Toronto, supplied a dozen tallies and 13 helpers for Blind River, which tied him for the league postseason lead in each category.

Two of his playoff goals were game-winners, which went along with the 11 difference makers he notched during the course of the regular season that led not only the NOJHL, but the entire 132-team Canadian Junior Hockey League.

TYSON GILMOUR, (F) POWASSAN VOODOOS – The Powassan rookie chipped in with four points over the final two games of the finals vs. Blind River helping the Voodoos claim the NOJHL title.

Game 3 saw the 18-year-old from East York, Ont., dish out three assists in the 6-1 triumph.

He then scored once in Game 4 to extend a point streak to six as Powassan finished off the series sweep and win it all.

Overall, Gilmour ended up tied for third in NOJHL playoff scoring with 20 points in his 12-game run by scoring eight times and helping set-up 12 others.
