POWASSAN, Ont. – A Jackson Truchan power play tally nearly 14 minutes into the second period held up as the game-winner as the Soo Thunderbirds pulled out a narrow 2-1 road triumph over the Powassan Voodoos in a low-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The night’s opening 20 minutes went without a goal, thanks in part to the efforts of netminders Kolton Bourret of the Thunderbirds and the Voodoos’ Daniel Dirracolo.
Up a skater to begin the second period, Sault Ste. Marie broke the deadlock quickly when Jacob Smith took a backhand pass from James Legler and dashed into the left circle where he ripped a short side shot over the blocker of Dirracolo to give him goals in three straight contests and points in four.
Adding another via the man advantage, Truchan made it 2-0 Thunderbirds as he took a spinning feed from Legler and blasted it in from the right circle at 13:53.
Countering quickly, Caden Dubreuil put Powassan on the board less than a minute later when he eventually jammed in a loose puck off a play from behind the net from Mathieu MacMillan.
Bourret held firm the rest of the way, not allowing another to get past him, as neither team provided any more markers and saw the Soo hold on for the triumph.
The results sees the Thunderbirds move to 7-3-2-1 on the season, while the Voodoos four-game winning streak came to a close as they fell to 9-3-0-1 overall.
