POWASSAN, Ont. – A surging Soo Thunderbirds side got two goals from Cooper Foster to lead them to their seventh straight Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory, a 3-1 decision over the Powassan Voodoos Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Sault Ste. Marie began the scoring midway through the first period as Foster ripped a shot off the cross bar and in from the left of Powassan starter Alex Bugeja during a man advantage.
Up a skater again before the intermission, the Thunderbirds capitalized once more with Kelsey Ouellet collecting a rebound off an Andrew Gibson point effort, then pulling it over and lifting it into the back of the net at 15:26.
Countering early in the middle session, Finn Acton-Rinaldo put the Voodoos on the board when he snapped a shot through a crowd in front from the right circle for his third tally of the campaign that got through a screened Noah Zeppa.
Striking quickly in the third, the Soo’s Michael Chaffay set-up Foster in the slot who quickly whipped in his second of the night to put the guests back up by a pair, in what proved to be the evening’s final tally.
The result was a fifth straight triumph for Zeppa.
Along with running their winning streak to seven, the Thunderbirds improved to 27-5-2-3 on the year with the result while the Voodoos dropped their third in succession and slipped to 25-10-4-1 on the campaign.
