Voodoos acquire offensive Jr B forward

The Powassan Voodoos have added a point a game forward in a trade with the Carleton Place Jr Canadians of the Eastern Ontario Junior B League, the club announced on Tuesday.

Rhys Smetham, a 6’1” 180 pound forward had 9 goals 23 assists for 32 points in 29 games with the Jr Canadians in 2021-22.

The Voodoos acquired Smetham for a development fee.

The 19-year-old shined at the Voodoos recent prospects camp (July 9 & 10) netting a hat trick in his first intrasquad contest.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Jim, Chris, Peter and Josh for giving me this amazing opportunity to join the Powassan Voodoos,” said Smetham, who was born in England.

“I’m looking forward to hitting the ice and meeting the team as well as getting to know the area and be part of the community. I can’t wait for the season to begin! Let’s go Voodoos.”

Voodoos new coach Peter Goulet was familiar with Smetham. Goulet is glad to add him to the Voodoos roster.

“Rhys is a great addition for our team he is a tireless worker that brings a great attitude and energy to the rink every day,” said Goulet.

“He has the ability to create offence, Rhys wears his heart on his sleeve and is going to be a great teammate and addition to our team and the community.”

Smetham and the Voodoos are back on the ice on August 25 for the start of main camp at the Powassan Sportsplex.
