MATTAWA, ON – Jake Staples tallied twice and Kyle Moore notched his second consecutive game-winning goal to pace the Powassan Voodoos to a 6-1 victory over the Mattawa Blackhawks Tuesday evening in Game 2 of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series held at Mike Rodden Arena.
With the win, Powassan takes the best-of-three set in two straight and now advance to the East Division semifinal versus the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners, starting Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
In Tuesday’s contest, the Voodoos opened the scoring 5:37 in as NOJHL most valualbe player and rookie of the year recipient Steve Harland picked up his first goal and third point of the postseason.
Mattawa tied it six minutes later as Tyler Brodersen finished off the work of Brett Ouderkirk and Nick Grose.
Moore came right back 37 seconds later with the eventual difference maker as Powassan took a 2-1 lead to the first intermission.
The Voodoos tacked on two more in the middle session to go up by three as Staples and Jacob Erwin both found the back of the net in the stanza.
Powassan then put the game away in the final frame on markers by Staples and Aaron Sullivan to round out the scoring.
Matt Young picked up the win and Joe Sheppard the loss for the Blackhawks in their season-ending setback.
