Voodoos extend division lead with win over Canadians

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos got a pair of goals and an assist from affiliate Cam Russell to help propel them to a 7-3 triumph over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Voodoos defenceman Nicky Grose opened the scoring with a shorthanded effort at 2:36.

The home side added to their lead with Russell’s first of the night at 13:57.

Rayside-Balfour got one back late in the frame on a man advantage effort supplied by Cayse Ton with 75 seconds remaining.

Powassan broke the game open in the middle stanza getting a trio of tallies to go up 5-1 through 40 minutes.

Another Voodoos A.P., in Andy Baker notched the first of the period while Jake Staples had one via the power play and Michael Silveri’s 30th of the season at 19:34 allowed him to extend a point streak to eight in the process.

Nicholas Siracuse added to the Powassan cushion early in the third with an extra man effort before the Canadians countered with a power play goal of their from Bradley Chenier at 3:23.

Chenier added another and brought the visitors closer midway through the period, but Russell’s second of the night with 3:39 to go finished things off offensively.

Silveri and Kyle Moore had three assists each for the winners.

Garrett Forrest made 26 stops to record his 23rd win of the season to join Cochrane’s Brett Young as the co-league-leaders in victories.

Jessie Morin started for the Canadians and suffered the loss allowing four against on 40 attempts while MacKenzie Savard came in and saved 12 of 15 in relief.

With the victory, the Voodoos improved to 38-9-3-1 overall while extending their East Division lead over second place Cochrane (36-9-2-2) to four points. The Crunch does however hold two games in hand on Powassan.

In defeat, Rayside-Balfour fell to 26-21-1-0 and remains third in the NOJHL West.
