Voodoos gearing up camp

The Powassan Voodoos will hit the ice this week for the start of another hockey year.

The Voodoos open camp Thursday evening and will host a handful of green and white scrimmages throughout the weekend before hosting the French River Rapids for a pre season game Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Veteran head coach Peter Goulet starts his first main camp with the Voodoos after taking over in early July from Marc Lafleur who departed for an opportunity with Acadie-Bathurst of the QMJHL.

“We are all excited for the upcoming camp and the start of the 2022-2023 season,” said Goulet.

“Our camp which begins Thursday, August 25, 2022 in Powassan is the start of our process building our team.”

More than 40 rookies, signed players and veterans will suit up for the camp.

Goulet says roster spots will be earned.

“We expect camp to be very competitive and a hard fought battle to make our team,” said Goulet.

“Nothing in life is guaranteed and all players coming to camp will have to earn their spot on our team.”

The Voodoos also moved three players from the 2021-22 roster. They shipped out defenceman Ben Danielsen to the Toronto Patriots for a development fee and moved forward Justin Spurrell to the Burlington Cougars for a development fee.

They also moved local forward Brett Richardson to the Pembroke Lumber Kings for a development fee as well.

“Every season our roster is in flux and we wish these three all the best in their new uniforms this coming season,” said Chris Dawson, Voodoos general manager.
