Voodoos hand Thunderbirds 2nd straight home loss

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – A night after having their impressive 26-game unbeaten streak come to an end, the Powassan Voodoos returned to the win column Saturday as they doubled up the Soo Thunderbirds 4-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.

An early power play allowed Powassan to strike first as Ryan Theriault connected 57 seconds into the contest.

Sault Ste. Marie came back with a man advantage marker of their own 8:52 into the middle stanza compliments of Matthew Caruso’s team-leading 22nd tally of the season.

The Voodoos came right back however and regained the lead 50 seconds later on a Brett Hahkala effort.

Up a man, Tyson Gilmour extended the visitors cushion near the six-minute mark of the third as he notched his 17th overall.

The Thunderbirds pulled back to within one with 3:45 remaining in regulation thanks to Austin Kozluk, but Powassan secured the road victory in the final minute as Parker Bowman scored at 19:02 to wrap things up.

Gilmour also dished out two assists for a three-point night.

Zach Senecal had a couple of helpers for the Soo in the setback.

Nate McDonald made 29 saves to record the win for the Voodoos while Brandon Gordon faced 25 shots in defeat as the T-Birds dropped a second straight game on home ice.
