Voodoos ink U16 Trappers defender

POWASSAN – The NOJHL’s Powassan Voodoos have stayed close to home signing 16-year-old defenceman Zachary Major, the club announced Friday.

Major, a 9th round selection of the Owen Sound Attack in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, netted 4 goals and 9 assists for 13 points in 23 games with the North Bay U16 AAA Trappers in the Great North U18 League.

More importantly Major impressed as an affiliate player getting into eight games, including six playoff contests with the Voodoos.

“I’m grateful for being signed to a great team, with great staff and amazing coaches,” said Major.

“This is one step closer to the bigger goal. I was lucky enough to get called up for the voodoos playoffs last year. So I know what’s it like to be a part of the Voodoos, and I cannot wait to get started again.“

Chris Dawson, Voodoos general manager, says the 6’2”, 190 pound right hand shot defender has what it takes to bolster the Voodoos blueline in 2022-23.

“Zach came to our program and fit in right away,” said Dawson.

“He’s a solid two-way defender who can jump into the rush. He is a good player, but having watched Zach play for seven years, I can say he is a good person too and that’s what we are looking for quality hockey players and quality people.”

Major will join his teammates at the Voodoos next prospects camp on July 9 at Pete Palangio arena.
