Voodoos rally to clip Canadians in NOJHL exhibition action

POWASSAN, Ont. – Joe Whittet tallied twice to help the Powassan Voodoos rally for a 5-4 victory over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason contest at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Rayside-Balfour started strong getting first period goals from Matthew Dokis-Dupuis and Zachary Hausman to put the visitors up by a pair after 20 minutes.

The Canadians then went up by three at 18:46 of the middle stanza on a Hunter Chibbon effort.

Battling back, Powassan got on the board with 46 seconds remaining in the session compliments of Whittet.

Special teams then saw the Voodoos strike twice on the power play in the third to knot the affair at 3-3 on Ty Nicholson and Whittet extra man markers.

The home side kept coming and took their first lead of the day with 11:18 remaining off the stick of Ethan Masson.

Powassan native James McGill then supplied the eventual game-winner in the back half of the third to put the hosts up 5-3.

Rayside-Balfour drew closer as Graeme Siren connected at 15:44 to make it a one-goal game once again, however the Voodoos held on from there for the victory.

Shots on goal also favoured the winners by a 37-34 margin.

Owen Say and Kieran Carter-Crawford both saw time in net for the Voodoos as did Owen Kilganon and Nicholas Heinzle for RBC.
