SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A Gabienen Kioki power play goal 1:32 into overtime was the difference as the Powassan Voodoos came back to defeat the Soo Eagles 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday with 903 fans on hand at Pullar Stadium.
The visiting Voodoos were also quick to gain the lead Saturday as Cade Herd’s 15th put the guests up 1-0 just 62 seconds into the contest.
It stayed 1-0 Powassan until late in the second stanza when Charley Hanewall tied for the Eagles at 18:03 with his 11th tally of the season.
Sault Ste. Marie then took the lead four minutes into the third on an Alec Schwab effort.
Battling back, the Voodoos forced extra time with 2:44 left in regulation as Rico Rossi picked up the equalizer.
Picking up a late man advantage that carried over into OT, Kioki won it for Powassan to cap off the come from behind victory.
Joe Vrbetic turned in a solid 42-save effort to record the win in net for the Voodoos helping them improve to 21-16-1-1 on the season.
Meanwhile Soo starter Joseph Benedetto faced 33 shots in the setback as the Eagles fell for the first time in 2019, but did earn a point as their record went to 19-19-1-2 overall.
