Cochrane slips past Powassan 3-2
COCHRANE, Ont. – A Jon Marzec power play goal 4:52 into the third period proved to be the difference as the Cochrane Crunch went on to edge the Powassan Voodoos 3-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Tim Horton Event Centre.
The Crunch got off to a good start in the contest, notching the game’s opening tally 95 seconds in as Brenden Van Sweden put the home side in front.
Van Sweden then added his second of the stanza and fifth overall in just his fourth game with the club as he made it 2-0 at 14:11.
Following a scoreless middle session, Powassan used the man advantage to get on the board two and a half minutes in the third on defenceman Nicky Grose’s ninth of the campaign.
Up a man, Cochrane came right back with the eventual game-winner courtesy of Marzec at 4:52.
The Voodoos pulled to within one with 11:19 remaining with Jake Staples putting his 18th goal into the back of the net.
Powassan pressed for the equalizer, but Cochrane netminder Brett Young finished with 15 saves in the final frame and 44 stops overall to earn the win in the tightly-contested match-up.
Voodoos goaltender Garrett Forrest saw 41 attempts fired his way in defeat.
