GALLERY: Cubs hold off Voodoos with narrow 3-2 win

POWASSAN, Ont. – Cameron Walker’s second goal of the game, coming 16:18 into the second period, proved to be the game-winner as the Greater Sudbury Cubs went on to edge the Powassan Voodoos 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The hometown Voodoos began the night’s scoring just over four minutes into the match-up when Kaedyn Long raced down the ice in transition after a Cubs’ player rang a shot off the crossbar and in turn buried his chance by picking the bottom right corner on netminder Noah Beaulne.

Collecting an equalizer before the first intermission, Greater Sudbury’s Walker skated over the blueline and beat Powassan starter Daniel Dirracolo with a well-placed blocker-side attempt at 17:14.

On the power play to begin the middle frame, the Cubs capitalized when Oliver Smith neatly redirected a Christopher Innes point shot.

Walker then notched his second of the night as he fired one through the maze from inside the blueline along the right-side boards.

Moving to the third, it stayed 3-1 for Greater Sudbury until the final moments when the Voodoos’ Carson Ricci fired a rising shot through a screen from the left side with their goalie out for an extra attacker and only 14.2 seconds remaining.

However, the Cubs held firm the rest of the way to secure the road victory and for the time being move back into first overall in the NOJHL standings with their 94 points and a record of 46-10-2-0.

In defeat, Powassan dropped to 36-20-1-0 overall.
