Mackay magnificent as Wildcats defeat Voodoos

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats received a stellar 41-save performance from netminder Aaron Mackay to backstop his club to a 4-1 victory over the Powassan Voodoos in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

After a scoreless opening period, Elliot Lake began the scoring 6:49 into the second stanza as Cole Hepler collected his 35th goal of the season.

The man advantage allowed the Wildcats to go up by two just over four minutes later as Chad Lopez converted on the power play for his 16th tally of the campaign to make it 2-0 heading into the third.

In the final session, Kyle Moore’s 11th pulled Powassan to within one early in the frame.

Elliot Lake answered that however at 7:48 courtesy of a Josef Kittelberger goal, via the man advantage.

Hepler’s second of the night and 36th overall added some insurance with 9:19 to go to round out the night’s scoring.

Spencer MacLean had a pair of assists to aid the Wildcats offensive cause.

Garrett Forrest started for the Voodoos, but was forced to leave just two and a half minutes into the contest and was replaced by Mario Cavaliere, who faced 30 shots in defeat for the Voodoos.
