NOJHL names its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that forwards Mathieu Comeau (Hearst Lumberjacks) and Mason Walker (Greater Sudbury Cubs) along with goaltender Cole Vreugdenhil (Powassan Voodoos) have been named its Rogers 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending February 22.

Mathieu Comeau, (F) Hearst Lumberjacks –
A milestone moment last week saw veteran Hearst product become just the 10th player in NOJHL history to amass 300-plus points in a career.

The 20-year-old Comeau, picked up five in total over the time frame in a trio of Lumberjacks’ victories to help his club extend a current league-best run to 12 triumphs in a row. Included in this was an impressive overtime winner on Saturday against Kirkland Lake.

An alumnus of the Kapuskasing Flyers of the Great North U18 Hockey League, Comeau currently leads the way in NOJHL scoring this season with 88 points, while his 302 overall ties him for ninth highest on the all-time list.

Mason Walker, (F) Greater Sudbury Cubs –
Among the contributions of the 17-year-old standout was totaling a current league single-game, season-high six assists in a result over Timmins, while picking up eight points overall in two Greater Sudbury wins.

Walker has etched him name on the game sheet in six straight match-ups as well as in 16 of his past 17 outings and 22 of 24. Also, in the 29 contests in which he has registered at least one point, the Cubs have gone a stellar 26-0-1-2.

A former GNU18HL standout with his hometown Sudbury Wolves U16 AAA side, Walker is fifth in NOJHL offensive production on the year with 71 points in just 32 contests.

Cole Vreugdenhil, (G) Powassan Voodoos –
Making the start in three Powassan games on the road, in a span of under 48 hours, Vreugdenhil backstopped his team to a pair of victories and a narrow 2-1 setback, helping them inch closer to securing home-ice advantage in the opening round of the upcoming playoffs.

As the youngest, non-affiliate netminder in the league, the 16-year-old from Hannon, Ont., had a solid 1.35 goals-against average last week, to go with a save percentage of .952.

Coming out of the Halton Hurricanes U16 AAA system, Vreugdenhil is one off the NOJHL-lead in wins by a first-year goalkeeper with 12 and is second among rookies in both GAA and SV% at 2.87 and .918 respectively.
