Powassan needs double OT triumph over Timmins to extend win streak to 16
TIMMINS, Ont. – Andy Baker’s 22nd goal of the season, 30 seconds into double overtime, allowed the Powassan Voodoos to win their 16th consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game Saturday as the slipped past the Timmins Rock 4-3 in well-played contest at McIntyre Arena.
Neither side would score in a scoreless opening 20 minutes as goaltenders Nate McDonald of the Voodoos and Al Rogers of the Rock kept opposing shooters at bay.
Timmins would be the first side to strike in the second stanza as Jared Hester collected his eighth of the season at 8:11.
A pair of late power plays in the frame allowed Powassan to draw level then take the lead on man advantage efforts courtesy of Gabriel Rheault and Tyson Gilmour.
The Rock’s Wayne Mathieu knotted the affair at 2-2 just 50 seconds into the third before Gilmour added his second of the night at 6:23 to put the visitors back in front.
Timmins did rally to force OT thanks to captain Jordan Rendle with 7:36 left in regulation.
After a scoreless first extra session, Baker won it early for Powassan in the second OT to extend the Voodoos winning streak and secure the additional point on the night.
Gilmour finished with three points on the night for the winning side.
Despite the victory, the Voodoos’ Gary Mantz was held off the scoresheet as he saw an impressive 20-game point streak come to a close.
McDonald made 31 stops to record the decision for the Voodoos while Rogers’ 34 saves helped his team earn a point in defeat.
