Powassan Voodoos up to 7th in CJHL rankings; Soo Thunderbirds stay at 14
SUDBURY, Ont. – The latest Canadian Junior Hockey League Top 20 rankings announced Monday sees the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Powassan Voodoos moving up a notch while the Soo Thunderbirds maintained their position for another week.
The NOJHL-leading Voodoos jumped to seventh nationally in the 132-team CJHL while the Thunderbirds were slotted 14th.
Powassan can clinch their first league regular season title in franchise history tonight with a victory at home over the Iroquois Falls Eskis in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Sportsplex.
A win vs. the Eskis this evening would also secure the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Copeland Cup – McNamara Trophy playoffs as the best Sault Ste. Marie could do is tie the Voodoos at the conclusion of the regular season, but Powassan holds the tie breaker in head-to-head competition as well as in goals-for and against differential.
After 51 games, Powassan has gone 42-7-1-1 while the Soo is 39-11-1-1 after 52 outings.
There was no change this week among the top five teams in the CJHL rankings with the Brooks Bandits (AJHL), Georgetown Raiders (OJHL), Les Cobras de Terrebonne (LHJAAAQ), Steinbach Pistons (MJHL) and Battlefords North Stars (SJHL) tabbed first through fifth respectively.
