POWASSAN, Ont. – A Reyth Smith third period man advantage marker proved to be the game-winner as the Powassan Voodoos went on to pull out a narrow 2-1 triumph over the Blind River Beavers Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

A good start for the Beavers saw them open the scoring two and a half minutes into the contest when Bryce Burnett did some solid work in the Voodoos’ end then fed an open Jack Robinson, who snapped a shot from the top of the crease past netminder Daniel Dirracolo.

Staying 1-0 Blind River well into the second stanza, Powassan drew level after battling along the end boards before eventually putting a play in front that was put to the net by Caden Dubreuil, then chipped in by teammate Chase Thompson.

Taking the lead while up a skater in the third, the Voodoos worked the play around and eventually got it over to Smith in the right circle when he put one through Wintle with a well-placed attempt at 6:20.

Getting their goalie out in the late going, in an effort to notch an equalizer and send it to overtime, then picking up a power play, Blind River could not however get another by Dirracolo before time expired, to give Powassan the narrow victory.

The result sees the Voodoos move to 2-0 early on the season while the Beavers slipped to 2-1.
