POWASSAN, Ont. – A Tomas Yachmenev goal 3:03 into overtime was the decider as the Powassan Voodoos rallied for a 3-2 triumph over the Blind River Beavers in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Visiting Blind River got the early jump in the contest thanks to Ryan Peck who picked up his third of the campaign at 7:51.
It was more Beavers later in the frame, thanks to the power play, as Lucas Adams converted with the man advantage.
Heading to the power play themselves late in the second stanza, Powassan pulled to within one at 16:58 as Eric Allair notched his third with assists going to Brett Shawana and Matthew Hardwick.
The Voodoos then tied things up nearly nine minutes into the third on Ryan Mills’ seventh to level the proceedings and help send the contest to extra time.
In the OT, with the two sides skating three aside, Yachmenev corralled the puck in his own his zone, darted around the net and flew up the right side into the Blind River end and whipped the game-winner past Beavers’ netminder Garret Boyonoski to complete the comeback.
Voodoos goalkeeper Christian Cicogoi made 29 saves to record the win while Boyonoski faced 20 shots in defeat with his side picking up a point.
