Canadians clip Voodoos in high-scoring affair

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Rayside-Balfour Canadians struck for six first period goals and then withstood a Powassan Voodoos comeback bid to win 9-6 Monday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Danny Lepage got the Canadians going with a marker 2:02 into the game only to see the Voodoos respond with the equalizer just 27 seconds later thanks to Eric Champagne.

It was all Rayside-Balfour the rest of the frame as they got a pair of tallies from Bradley Chenier and singles supplied by Connor Brown, Tristan Simm and Ryan Erickson.

Erickson made it 7-1 at the 7:55 mark of the middle stanza before the Voodoos notched a pair of late efforts from Tyler Gervais-Rolfe, on a penalty shot, and Daniel Walker, via the power play, to move the home side to within four.

Powassan kept coming in the third striking three times in a span of one minute and 37 seconds to pull within one.

Daniel Golba and Aaron Dart picked up man advantage efforts while Jesse Anderson scored his first NOJHL goal with still over 12 minutes to play.

The Canadians regrouped however and got some insurance from their captain Erickson who finished off a hat trick at 13:17 before Kyle Fransen iced it with an empty netter in the final seconds to round out the night’s scoring.

Otis Goldman dished out four assists for the Canadians with Erickson adding a couple helpers of his own for a five-point night.

Chenier also had five points as he set-up three tallies to go with his two markers.

MacKenzie Savard faced 45 shots in picking up the win while Garrett Forrest the loss seeing 35 attempts come his way.

Brendan Dale made two saves in a relief stint just over two minutes in length for the Voodoos.
