Voodoos blank Blackhawks to sweep weekend series

MATTAWA,ON – Nathaniel McLeod tallied twice and set-up another while Matt Young stopped all 18 shots he faced for the shutout as the Powassan Voodoos blanked the Mattawa Blackhawks 7-0 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Mike Rodden Arena.

Powassan took a 3-0 lead in the second half of the opening 20 minutes on markers by Brendan D’Agostino, Dante Juris and Stavros Soilis.

McLeod tacked on his pair in the middle frame to put the visitors up by five through two periods of play.

After Steve Harland buried his 13th goal of the season at 6:11 of the third, Tyler Gervais-Rolfe wrapped up the scoring with a shorthanded effort in the final minute.

Joe Sheppard was pelted with 66 pucks in defeat for Mattawa.

Young’s shutout was his second of the campaign, putting him in a tie for the league-lead in that department.

For Steven Harland, that finished off a week where he netted 5 goals and 3 assists in 3 games this week for the Voodoos.

The win gave the Voodoos the weekend sweep as they thumped the Blackhawks 11-2 at home in Powassan on Friday night.
